Barbel on a Zig Rig

Barbel on a Zig Rig

Species other than carp get caught regularly on zigs, it’s not uncommon to hear tales about epic battles and humongous Catfish attached to the end. it’s just unbelievable fish of that size strike such tiny baits in midwater… But they most certainly do, and the ‘big old moggies’ just seem a sucker for a small black zig.

Well, here’s on for you, Zig Rigs on rivers… Bert Lee Harding sent in a couple of snaps as he couldn’t quite believe it. When out stalking Barbel on his small local river, he decided to try the ‘Zigs’ to see how the fish reacted to them.

Bert put on a Black and Yellow LiquiZig and his rod was soon hooped over…  A Barbel on a Zig Rig

He continued fishing and managed to also land another fish on the same Black and Yellow Zig.

Wow Bert, that’s brilliant, great angling

Thinking about it fishing zigs on a river may not be as crazy as it first sounds. You can just imagine your bait fluttering up and down in the river, with the flow putting almost lifelike movements to your hookbait.

Most of the rivers natural food will be coming down in the flow, up off bottom, as such river species such as Chub and Barbel have evolved to become amazing feeder’s mid water.

Obviously the amount of movement created and how the zig acts in the water will depend on the depth and flow of the river, but is Bert onto something here? Next time you’re out, why not give it a go and tell us how you get on.

I Know it’s something I’ll be experimenting with when I’m back on them
